Typical Foundation Types |
| |
1. Poured Concrete
Poured concrete foundations are the most common in today's new construction market. Although considered a solid upright slab, poured walls can often be identified by the lines left in the surface by the forms. Newer foundations have vertical form joints every 2-4' whereas early poured foundations have Horizontal lines every 8-12". Cracks and Honeycombs can be Injected or Excavated. |
|
2. Concrete Block
Block foundations are still quite common in some areas as the foundation of choice. While a well laid block wall may be more visually appealing to some, age does take its toll on the mortar joints. To borrow an old adage, Prevention is the best medicine. This is particularly true of block walls. Unfortunately prevention must be thought about prior to backfilling (see New Construction).Once this is no longer an option then more costly steps must be taken. |
3. Field Stone
Stone foundations are often thought of as a waterproofing nightmare. Yet by utilizing the the internal or external repairs described on this site, these enduring foundations can be repaired and enjoyed whether for storage or as a family room Depending on the condition of the foundation an Internal Breakout or an Exterior Excavation can be performed. |
4. Preserved Wood
In our opinion preserved wood foundations are a poor alternative to concrete. When these leak it is important not to allow it to continue for long. These foundations are best dealt with using an Exterior Excavation |
5. Brick
Clay brick foundations were generally constructed of three layers of brick with some bricks crossing layers to lock them together. Most brick foundations are in excellent structural condition. Some though do show signs of deterioratiion and should be repaired from the outside by means of an Exterior Excavation. If the brick wall is structurally sound yet suffers from leaking, then an Internal Breakout can be performed. |
